Elizabeth Kocanski Carolan was born on November 24, 1980 in Elmira, New York and is better known for her ring name, Beth Phoenix “The Glamazon”. At the age of 11 she entered in a newspaper coloring contest and won tickets to the WWF show, this incident she later claimed started it all, her passion for wrestling. She believed that the experience she would gain in amateur wrestling would help her achieve her goal. She started amateur wrestling on the Elmira, New York Notre Damn High School scholastic team, where she was the first female varsity wrestler in the school’s history.
As an amateur wrestler she has won in several competitions bagging the title, Women’s Champion in the North-East Tournament, she also became the Women’s Champion in the New York State Fair Tournament in 999 and was awarded most outstanding wrestler in Brockport Freestyle Tournament.
Upon graduating High School she went and enrolled in two schools: a professional wrestling school and Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. Her first choice of wrestling school was Stu Hart’s Dungeon but due to its far location she opted to enroll in a local school.
She was trained by Joey Knight and Robin Knightwing who were both trained in Hart Dunegon. Her professional wrestling career kicked off with her debut match against Alexis Laree (Mickie James), after which she participated in many independent wrestling promotions against men and women alike, including the likes of Sumie Sakai, Angel Williams, Joey Knight and Kevin Grace.
Her debut on OVW kicked off in July 2004, wherein she appeared as the valet and girlfriend of Chris Masters, and later as the manager of Aaron “The Idol” Stevens and was later joined by Shelly Martinez whom she later feuded in early 2006. She soon stopped appearing regularly in the show when she signed a developmental contract with RAW.
Beth made her debut on WWE on the May 8th episode of RAW wherein coming from a crowd she attacked, Mickie James, hinting a feud in the past before WWE. After a week she was introduced by Trish Stratus as an old friend of Mickie James who had wronged her in the past. She was then introduced by Trish as the newest Raw Diva and welcomed herself by attacking Mickie from behind chasing her out of the ring and through the crowd. She made her in-ring debut in RAW when she teamed up with Torrie Wilson and defeated Victoria and Candice while Mickie was watching from outside the ring.
During her first solo match up against Victoria resulted in her suffering from a broken jaw causing her to be gone from the show for well over a year, but she was back to action in OVW two months after the placement of the titanium plate on her jaw.
She made her come back on the July 9th edition of RAW as a villain in replacement of Melina as Jillian Hall’s tag team partner. She became the number one contender for Candice Michelle’s Women’s Championship after winning the Interpromotional Divas Battle Royal .
Her dominating persona and relentless attack on Mickie James, Jillian Hall and Candice Michelle on the September 10 edition of RAW paved way to her being named as the Glamazon. She won her first WWE Women Championship defeating Candice Michelle at No Mercy and retained the belt on October 22 episode of RAW injuring Candice Michelle, leaving Candice with a broken Mandible.
She has relentlessly defeated her Women’s Title and on New Year’s Eve 2007, Beth defeated Melina and Mickie in a Triple Threat Match defending her Women’s Title. She lost her Women’s Title on April 14 against Mickie James and failed to recapture her title in the re-match on the May 5 edition of RAW.
During the Judgment Day, she failed to regain the Women’s Championship in a Triple Threat Match against Mickie. She defeated Melina during the first ever Diva’s “I Quit” match, she later teamed with Katie Burchill to defeat Melina and Mickie in a tag team match.
On the July 14 edition of RAW after defeating Santino Marella, Beth had a post match confrontation with Santino ending with the two kissing bring forth the pairing of the Glamazon and Marella making them an onscreen super couple earning the name “Glamarella”. She won the Women’s Championship against Mickie at Summer Slam while Santino won the Intercontinental Championship against Kofi Kingston. At No Mercy, Beth was successful in defending her title against Candice Michelle.
Beth was awarded the Slammy Award for Diva of the Year on December 8, 2009. On January 2009, at the Royal Rumble she lost Women’s Championship to Melina and when she competed during the WrestleMania XXV in the Diva Battle Royal, she was eliminated by Santino who competed in drag claimed to be Santina.
Outside the ring, Beth loves watching horror movies from Evil Dead Series to SAW series and anything with Freddy Keuger, being raised in a family of musicians (he father is a musician) she loves music from jazz to pop but has a strong preference for good fashioned metal and is a huge fan of Pantera. Beth is married to Joey Carolan better known for his ring name as Joey Knight.
